programming networcard in LAN

hi, i would like to do a simple program that is like a messenger on stmh in LAN.
i don't know much about hardware in assmebly world. only HDD and FDD
so i would be happy if anyone helps :)

Your messenger might prefer to talk to the networkcard-driver or network-"API" / TCP-stack from directly to the hardware, even in DOS ;-)
